Statistical Office in Białystok belongs to the services of official statistics subject to  Central Statistical Office. It operates on the basis of:

• Law on Official Statistics dated 29th June 1995 (Journal of Laws No. 88, item 439 with later amendments),
• Statute of SO in Białystok introduced by instruction No. 12 of the President of the CSO dated 21st August 2012 (CSO Office Journal item 39 with later amendments),
• Regulation on the Organisation of Statistical Office in Białystok introduced by Regulation No. 10 by the Director of Statistical Office in Białystok dated 1st October 2012,
• Law on Civil Service dated 21st November 2008 (Journal of Laws No. 227, item 1505 with later amendments).

According to the abovementioned documents the duties of Statistical Office in Białystok include:

• organization and conducting the statistical surveys,
• collecting, gathering, storing, analysing and elaborating of the statistical data,
• providing information to the public, to all levels of public administration authorities operating in Podlaskie Voivodship as well as to the entities of the national economy,
• keeping the official registers:
• REGON - National Official Business Register,
• TERYT - National Official Register of Territorial Division,
• popularisation of statistical knowledge.

Within the scope of work carried out for broadly defined public statistics, Statistical Office performs nationwide specialised tasks that include:

• in the field of statistics of forestry and environmental protection:
• carrying out activities in accordance with the programme of statistical surveys of official statistics,
• initiation and elaboration of methodology,
• preparation of proposals to the project of the programme of statistical surveys of official statistics,
• collecting, gathering and analysing the statistical data,
• preparation of publications in accordance with the plan of statistic elaborations as well as the editorial title-plan,
• carrying out activities concerning methodology, elaboration and publishing the results of surveys in the field of forestry satellite account,
• elaboration of the methodology, conducting surveys and analyses as well as preparation and issuing of publications on Green Lungs of Poland ecoregion,
• participation in the international cooperation, including Euroregions' Statistics and in particular organization of joint statistical surveys, praparation and issuing of the publications regarding the Niemen and the Bialowieza Forest Euroregions,
• cooperation in the field of carrying out transborder surveys with the Centre of Transborder Areas Surveys and Statistics for Euroregions of  Statistical Office in Rzeszów as well as with statistical offices participating in the accomplishment of these tasks,
• elaboration of the national databases and preparation of national and regional tables; design and programming work concerning forestry and environmental protection statistics.
